What I learned: Peak oil is a concept defined as the point at which the level of production of oil ceases to increase. The peak production of oil in the United States was reached in 1970. The world is expected to reach peak oil in the year 2010. The world consumes 5 barrels of oil for every 1 barrel we find, giving as all an idea of the finite amount of fossil fuel energy on our planet. Farmers are one of the highest paid professions in Cuba. Over 50% of the agricultural needs of Havana comes from urban agriculture (from city limits). Over 80% of Cuban agriculture is organic. In the United States, our food travels over 1500 miles on average to get to our plate! We should do more increase local food supply.

What I learned: Charlotte Moore for Board of Supervisors in Roanoke County!!! John Alex Golden, the president of the VAYDs, gave a great presentation on how YDs play a role in elections in our state. We should do more to convince YDs that issues that we fight for now, will affect their lives for years to come.

What I learned: A great progressive voice exists in this group of democrats from Lexington. With their help, Goodlatte almost lost the city of Lexington with no democratic opponent. It is quite evident that these individuals are involved and engaged in the issues. I believe I will begin to be a little more concise with my presentation of ideas.

What I learned: What defines a leader? We could all derive our own answer, but one virtue that we can all agree upon is CHARACTER. I believe today more than ever, we should be looking for good people to fill our legislature. Mike is a good man, who wants honest change in our commonwealth. What I learned: It is such a novel idea in today's politics for candidates to just listen, but I believe there is nothing better than face-to-face interaction with people. This is a process...we are gathering ideas, then we will analyze all of the information, and then I will propose what solutions may best serve the people of our district given all of the input. This system takes a great deal of time and can be frustrating for those looking for answers, but this will produce the best consensus.

What I learned: Our first coffee shop discussion was a true success (pictured below). Those citizens that attended were thrilled to actually just be able to voice their opinions and concerns with regards to the healthcare crisis in America. There is so much value in GRASS-ROOTS POLITICS and talking face-to-face with the good people of our district. An interesting point was called to my attention about someone who was moving to another state; this person had health insurance, but the company she was covered through did not do business in the the state she was moving to. She was forced to switch companies, and the new company would not cover any pre-existing conditions which were covered in the previous policy for one year. AWFUL. Every discussion I have about healthcare, there is always a strong belief in prevention. The cost of birth control pills have increased 120% in the past few months and will continue to triple in the next few months; please read this troubling article http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17751527/ . Not only are premiums continuing to increase, but deductibles have increased as well, making it so hard for working families. One consistent voice is that we must learn to be INCLUSIVE in our discussion on healthcare, and that means engaging business and healthcare professionals also.

What I learned: The miracles of the internet have allowed me to have great discussions with people all across the district in one on-line chat room. Amazing when you think about how the internet has revolutionized campaigning. Good turnout and great discussion.

What I learned: Henry Lee was very smart young man attending Virginia Tech. It was a shame that our region lost two very impressive young locals, the other being Jarrett Lane of Narrows. They were solitarian and valedictorian of their high schools respectively.

What I learned: Roanoke City Democratic Women's Picnic is May 18th. There are so many good people around the area who are willing to work hard together for real progress. I am glad Carolyn did not have too much to drink, haha. John Edwards had some great words and we really enjoyed the event. The discussions about the Virginia mental health system with the recent tragedy are very much relevant.

What I learned: Today I will sign up to become a member of the Kiwannis Club. I am glad to know that such a group exists to help the children of the world. I learned a great deal about the Pacific Rim Trail on the West Coast and how development is endangering our wildlife there. I heard a great brief message about the hearing center in Roanoke that helps all people hear the sounds of the world.

What I learned: Lots of energy on this committee and they definitely have the most fun of any committee meeting I have been to. I met a lot great democrats that are ready for change and to make a difference and I was glad to find the Roanoke City Committee active and full of opinions. I was reminded about how much of our drug costs are derived from advertising dollars. No child left behind is not working for city schools, and the worst story I heard was of a local school greatly reducing their emphasis on science in the sixth grade because the SOLs will not test sixth graders in science. This is absurd!! We have given up so much for corporate profits. We need funding for our schools. Don't make our poor children compete for funding based on these ill-advised testing mandates.

What I learned: This was my first Kiwanis meeting. I new a little about the organization, but I learned a lot more. Some great people make up the Roanoke Club. "Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to changing the world one child and one community at a time" as stated on the website: http://www.kiwanis.org/ Today, Kiwanis hosted a child-advocacy group called CASA which helps with children effected by abusive and neglecting parents. APRIL 10th- STAUNTON DEMOCRATIC COMMITTEE MEETING
What I learned: Lots of energy in this crowd and they had many great questions and concerns. I learned that the New York Times Magazine had an article recently about big business leaders that are pushing FOR healthcare for all Americans because that spreads the costs around and addresses the healthcare crisis we have here in America. With fertilizer such a huge component of input costs to farmers, we should focus on developing alternative new alternative fertilizers to help lower costs. The question arose with regards to a paying for healthcare system that would take care of all Americans and that can be addressed many ways; we can begin by trying to close the off shore tax shelters and closing the tax gap which is estimated to be around $400 billion.
APRIL 9th- HARRISONBURG CITY DEMOCRATIC COMMITTEE MEETING
What I learned: I enjoyed meeting this group of Democrats in Harrisonburg. A major concern that was brought up is the need for long-term care for the elderly. Both affordability and accessibility are concerns to many individuals in the region, but with the aging population of baby boomers, we have more citizens that need long-term care than ever before. When speaking of farmers, we should not forget irrigation issues and bio-diesel fuels to help reduce input costs. I was educated on how the Clean Water Act directly effects planning in the region, and it was brought to my attention by John Simmers (a research biologist) that we have redundant projects being implemented by the state and federal governments. This is essentially wasting taxpayer dollars. Calls came out for increased emphasis on the environment and transportation.
APRIL 2nd-BOTETOURT COUNTY DEMOCRATIC COMMITTEE MEETING
What I learned: Today we were able to meet Janice Lee Allen Boyd, who is an individual thinking about running for Congress as well. She talked about many different issues, stressing Iraq and education. June 16th will be the Sixth District Fundraiser which will be held at Rockbridge County High School. Everyone should plan to attend!
MARCH 30th-31st- VIRGINIA YOUNG DEMOCRATS CONVENTION
What I learned: Awesome to see lots of Great Young Democrats coming together. I could really feel the energy and the passion about issues that effect our country and our lives. I learned the importance of Fair Trade Agreements to Virginia and to the Democratic Party of Virginia. The Democratic Party of Virginia stressed that we should join 36 other industrialized nations in offering healthcare to all of our citizens. YDA has a great program called demopolis, which helps local YD chapters manager their membership. The YDA annual convention will be in Dallas this summer, so try to attend! Some great documentaries that we should all check out are "Iraq For Sale" and "I know I am Not Alone." When asked, the young democrats said they would want the following attributes in a young candidate: ENERGY, HONESTY, KEEP PROMISES, OUTLINE THE IMPLEMENTATION OF ALL POLICIES, GIVE A VOICE TO THOSE WHO DON'T NECESSARILY HAVE ONE. All are great recommendations that I truly take to heart in my campaign for truth. THANKS YDS OF VIRGINIA.

What I learned: Senator John Edwards is looking to serve his fourth term in South-Western Virginia. He has accomplished a great deal in his time and he has a great deal of support amongst our local leaders.
MARCH 29th- MEETING WITH LOCAL UNION LEADERS
What I learned: Today I met with the leaders of local unions. Our local unions are fighting for the issues that we all care about, better healthcare, increased wages, improvement to our social systems, and better education. The unions offer a voice to thousands of workers, to be able to speak to and bargain on behalf of workers. In many ways, this seems as though it is a fundamental necessity for many industries to protect the rights of the workers. The leaders brought to my attention the Free Choice Act, which would make it easier for workers to organize and to unionize. This bipartisan bill seems very fair and should be brought to our attention. We should do more to help middle class America and the hard-workers of our great country!
MARCH 28th-S.T.A.N.D. (Students Taking Action Now for Darfur) and Lynchburg College’s SERVE (Students Engaged in Responsible Volunteer Experiences) 7pm at Lynchburg College with Shannon Valentine
What I learned: A great presentation was given by a two groups at Lynchburg College about the genocide happening in Darfur, Sudan. Shannon Valentine, House Delegate, gave a speech about submitting her legislation which tried to make the Virginia Retirement System divest from foreign companies that did business with the government of Sudan. Some facts: More than 400,000 people are dead from the genocide in Darfur. 2.25 million people have left homeless due to the ethnic cleansing sponsored by the government. Ninety percent of the villages in Darfur have been destroyed. A modern day holocaust with little being done in the name of human rights. We should all support Senate Bill 831. MARCH 27th-AUGUSTA COUNTY PEACE AND JUSTICE GROUP EVENT ON NATIONAL HEALTHCARE FOR ALL
What I learned: The ACPJ hosted a very informative forum on healthcare which was lead by Dr. Ross Isaccs from the University of Virginia. Dr. Issacs was the source of a great information: Over 47 million uninsured Americas (9 million are children) and about the same number who are underinsured. Poverty is a transmissible disease (great point). The United States is 42nd in the world in the category of Infant Mortality and 48th in Life Expectancy (we are the richest country in the world, so no excuse). One billion people world-wide have high blood pressure. More people died from preventable chronic disease last year than from ALL WARS we have fought as a nation combined! Our country had more people internally displaced from Hurricanes Katrina & Rita than other region of the world. 10% of the world's population is in Sub-Saharan Africa, but that accounts for 60% of all HIV cases. Emerging economies have the highest rates of obesity in the world. Cuba has the lowest Infant Mortality in the Western Hemisphere. Healthcare is more than just an issue, it is a right. Being the most prosperous nation in the world, we should have great emphasis on improving our healthcare system. Something must be done.
MARCH 27th-VIRGINIA WESTERN MADISON SOCIETY
What I learned: Virginia Western has a very active group called the Madison Society which raises political awareness on campus. I think this is an excellent model for other schools for other schools to follow suit.
MARCH 26th-SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKE DEMOCRATIC CLUB MEETING
What I learned: FASCINATING!! John Richardson who is a science teacher at Franklin County High School was one of 1000 scientists that Al Gore trained in Nashville to give his presentation on global warming. PLEASE READ ALL OF THIS INFORMATION: Winter 2006 was the warmest on record; January 2007 was the hottest on record; 10 of the warmest years in recorded history have come in the past 14 years; NEW--the rate of global warming has increased 300% since 1976; 2004 had the first ever hurricane in the South-Atlantic; there were a record 1717 tornadoes in 2004; In 2006, Mumbai, India had a record 37 inches of RAIN IN ONE DAY; 20% of the polar ice caps have been melted since 1976; 70% of the emperor penguin population has perished since 1976; Out of the 928 scientific studies conducted in the past 10 years about global warming, NONE (0) have concluded against global warming. We must realize the consequences of our actions. Good group of democrats at the lake and very active people, very impressive. Time for change is well-overdue.
MARCH 26th-ROANOKE VALLEY-ALLEGHANY REGIONAL COMMISSION OPEN HOUSE
What I learned: RVARC is a regional planning commission that covers four counties, Roanoke, Botetourt, Craig, and Alleghany, and also covers the cities/towns of Covington, Roanoke, Salem, Clifton Forge and Vinton. "The Commission brings together local governments and other organizations to promote discussion and actions on issues on regional importance." This organization helps localities with a vast array of projects from transportation planning to ride-sharing. MARCH 23rd-ROANOKE COLLEGE POLITICAL SCIENCE CLASS
What I learned: Today I spoke about how I got to this point as a candidate to a group of college students lead by Professor Heath Brown in the Political Science department at Roanoke College. It was interesting to reflect back on my path to this point. These last several months have been ones filled with learning and passion. I can see that the youth of America today are more concerned with issues and are fed-up with partisan politics. I am proud to represent a democratic voice that focuses on the issues, because that is what our youth want. Look for those qualities in any candidate and the Sixth District will improve.

What I learned: Thanks to the work of people like Matt, Roy, and Paul, a democratic voice is alive and well at Roanoke College. I hope that my new YRV initiative will have the the efforts of youth like this.
MARCH 21st-LYNCHBURG CITY DEMOCRATIC COMMITTEE MEETING
What I learned: Great turnout from a strong and active group. Very engaging and curious lines of questioning from a group of individuals that are concerned with the environment, education and middle America. Interest was expressed in attracting new businesses so that we may retain our youth by having jobs for them. I was reminded that 1 million Virginians do not have health insurance. I had the honor to meet a great delegate from the Lynchburg area, Shannon Valentine. She is very active in our VA legislature and we should be proud of her representation. She represents the true voice of the Democrats in the Lynchburg area. Former Senator Schewel was kind enough to offer several words of advice which I greatly appreciate. We all should learn to put intra-party politics aside for the greater good.

MARCH 19th-AGRICULTURE CONFERENCE, SPONSORED BY BOB GOODLATTE
What I learned: There are 650 commercially viable agricultural products in the United States. An estimated 9 million more acres of corn will be cultivated to produce ethanol. The purpose of this conference is to help find ideas for the new farm bill later this year. The last farm bill in 2002, was created during a period of surplus in the federal budget. Now with tax cuts for the rich and 8 billion dollars a month being spent on Iraq, subsidies for farmers will take a hit. Input costs (variable costs associated with doing business) for farmers are increasing especially energy and feed. When I asked the congressman about energy costs, Bob Goodlatte wants the farmers to be more efficient when it comes to energy costs. At the same time we have record profits being posted by oil giants (eg ExxonMobile $39 Billion in 2006). How can you look a farmer in the eye and tell him to learn to be more efficient, but allow the American people to be taken advantage of with energy prices? Bob Goodlatte's response, 'We cannot control pricing in a Free Market Economy.'
Concerned citizens from the crowd argued that more subsides should be given to smaller farmers and Bob's response was 'Even large farms are owned by families.' The congressman used the words "Free Market Economy & Free Enterprise System" as a generic response to many questions and in the same sentence he would use "fairly" as well. What is fair about favoring corporate profits over small business farms in your own district? What is fair about taking advantage of middle America, the workhorse of our country, for the gains of a few? I asked Bob Goodlatte that and he did his little two-step. We will not go away that easy.

MARCH 16th-ROANOKE CITY CAUCUS MEET & GREET
What I learned: The Roanoke City caucus is comprised of a provocative group of people who are anxious for change in a untraditional fashion. Tony taught me about the benefits of educating those in our correctional system and using skilled inmates to train other inmates in a variety of fields. I learned to remember to keep my message positive and upbeat. I will stress the true smalltown values that western Virginia embodies, and we should never forget those roots.
MARCH 12th-15th-ASSOCIATION OF OPERATING ROOM NURSES CONGRESS
What I learned: Nursing and medical technicians are positions of extreme growth in the today's workforce and there are shortages in these fields nationwide. The medical industry in the United States makes up approximately 30% of the world-wide medical market. The number of hospitals will grow by 20% over the next 7 years, which further indicates the need for quality education in nursing and technical fields. Skills and vocational training are necessary elements to our education system that our society must try to improve upon.

MARCH 10th-1st ANNUAL POST-GENERAL ASSEMBLY BREAKFAST, AUGUSTA COUNTY
What I learned: One Million Dollars came out of the Augusta County Operating Budget last year to help build roads. The use of funds coming out of the VA General Fund to pay for our new transportation bill is not permitted to for secondary roads. This means little transportation assistance for rural VA and to pay for bill, areas such as education will feel the pinch. David Toscano, a delegate from Charlottesville, explained the problems with transportation in Virginia. I was again informed that Virginia has one of the lowest gas taxes in the country. Since much of the funding for the transportation bill comes from bonds, BOB explained to us this is essentially a birth tax by passing the burden onto younger generations to pay for our borrowing. I believe that the revenue lost from the Bush tax cuts for the rich, could have gone toward supplementing state funding for our schools. Now the states and localities must bear the burden and juggle education, transportation, and healthcare issues. VA could raise the gas tax if our country was doing more to limit the record profits of oil companies (e.g. Exxon $39 Billion last year). WAKE UP AMERICA, WAKE UP VIRGINIA...THIS IS NO GAME! OUR WONDERFUL COUNTRY IS IN THE HANDS OF THE GREEDY. We must help our children in education and focus on worker initiatives such as healthcare, and be proud to stand for these righteous ideals.
MARCH 8th-ROANOKE COUNTY DEMOCRATIC COMMITTEE MEETING
What I learned: I did not know that the VA medical centers (for veterans) is a separate entity completely from all armed forces medical centers. Ann Benois from the VA Medical Center in Salem did a very good job of educating us on the difference between the two medical systems and we should not associate the problems with places like the Walter Reid Army Medical Center, with the VA system. The Salem VA Medical Center is understaffed and can use all of the help we can give them. I am very glad to hear that Governor Kaine is making rounds to our area to see what Western Virginia thinks about money coming out of the General Fund to help the transportation bill. Places like our area will be effected by that because the emphasis is on NOVA, Richmond and Tidewater. Let us make sure they don't forget us!! What I learned: Shenandoah County is comprised of a great group of Democrats. With the mind of Ray and the heart of Tony this is a group that is full of ideas for improvement and progress. Dennis brought up a great question, asking if the government should modify the choosing of the Attorney General and staff to help decrease the political pressures on these individuals. I mentioned to him that the problem is more systemic in my opinion, than just this modification. Iraq is still a very important issue on many people's minds. Shenandoah County has a median voting age of 61! WHERE ARE THE YOUTH? Come one, come all to the Democratic Women's Club of Shenandoah County which is lead by Sandra and meets once monthly. MARCH 6th-BLUE RIDGE TOWN HALL MEETING, Blue Ridge Fire Department 7pm. Open to the public.
What I learned: Blinding are the lines we construct. When will we learn as a society that "politics-as-usual" does not work for the common good of all? Why can we not see the blatant polarization and manipulation from many of our political leaders? This meeting brought out both republicans and democrats, all of which are human beings who reside in the little area of Blue Ridge, VA. When the discussion turns to issues that hit home, people begin to nod their heads. It does not matter where your political or religious sentiments lie, the citizens of Blue Ridge care about healthcare for their families, increased educational initiatives for their children, and emphasis on our small businesses. Let us find issues we can all agree we need to improve upon, instead of giving into a divisive agenda.

What I learned: I feel as though we have come a long way in the past couple of weeks, but this is an uphill battle and I am focused on getting to know the good democrats of the Sixth District. There are many good democrats in Augusta County and I hope to use that as a source of strength, energy, and inspiration. With my emphasis on small business, Frank Williams was quick to underscore the importance of agriculture to our area. I am proud to know Augusta County has partnered with the Staunton Committee to have a Democratic HQ in that region. That will prove to be a valuable resource for candidates in our region.

What I learned: April 26th at Roanoke College the ICVC will host an event called "Religion and Peace, Are They Compatible?" This is an excellent topic and is very fitting for our time.
MARCH 3rd-BATH COUNTY DEMOCRATIC COMMITTEE MEETING
What I learned: Based on recent voting figures, Bath County is the smallest voting contingency with an organized democratic committee in the Sixth District. I am quite moved by the fact that this small committee was the source of the first official contributions to my campaign. It almost pained me to take anything from them. I am trying so hard to fight for working class people like the good people of the Bath County Committee, and they could find it in their hearts to contribute to something worth fighting for. Small committee, but big hearts. That is small town America. Bath County Democrats, I am going to pour every ounce of sweat to work hard to make you proud. We could all learn a lot from small town America.

What I learned: Transportation is a very important issue to Virginia, but we should compromise on the right issues to solve this problem. Committees within close proximity of each other seem to want to share resources, but maintain their identity. It was fun to learn about the Democratic Club at SML!

What I learned: With a geographically large district such as ours, the important issues vary amongst the diverse populace. I believe that our party is looking to have more youth involved. Your youth represent our future.

What I learned: Deciding on Assisted Living for a loved one can be a complex decision. Someone should really start to research this far in advance because there are many different levels of assisted care or retirement living.
